CHIANCONE [,] FRANK ANTHONY CHIANCONE [:]  Frank Anthony Chiancone, 83, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 2, 2016. Frank was born in Queens, New York on August 12, 1932. He grew up in the New York City area, but soon decided he wanted to explore the world. He volunteered for the Army and served in the Korean War for two years. He returned to the U.S. and married Barbara Kean. They joined the Young Christian Workers and traveled to Colombia and Venezuela, where they performed labor and anti-poverty work. Frank then joined the U.S. Foreign Service and spent the next 29 years as a career foreign service officer in Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Pakistan, Mexico and Barbados. He was proud of the part he played in spreading the values of American democracy as a press and information officer for the U.S. Information Agency. In his work he cultivated a close connection to the local press and artist communities, preferring direct engagement to sitting in an Embassy office [JB emphasis]. He was also known to throw some great dance parties! Frank was a proud union member and was active in his union, AFGE Local 1812. He was proud of his work on successful union elections, as well as union campaigns and lawsuits that strengthened due process rights for all foreign service officers and that helped establish equal rights for women foreign service officers. In his retirement he worked as an administrator of St. Stephen of the Incarnation Episcopal Church, a volunteer child advocate for CASA, and a board member of his condo association. His passions included tennis and squash which he continued playing into his 80s. Frank will be missed by his six children, Joseph, Patricia, Janet, Thomas, Nancy and Chris; three grandchildren, Lucia, Jennifer and Nicholas; and his ex-wife and best friend Barbara.
