Voice of America's year-long series on the topic “Between Trade Agreements and Tariffs: The American Farmer,” has won first place in the 85th annual National Headliner Awards in the category "TV Business/Consumer Reporting."

The series written, produced and edited by VOA’s Midwest correspondent, Kane Farabaugh, detail the impact of trade disputes and tariffs on the U.S. agricultural industry, and U.S. farmers in particular.

“I’m thrilled that this in-depth reporting has been honored with a prestigious award,” said VOA Director Amanda Bennett. “Telling America’s story from all sides is a critical part of our mission.”

Founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic excellence. The first National Headliner Awards were presented in 1935. Since then, more than 2,600 Headliner medallions have been presented to outstanding photographers, writers, graphic artist, daily newspapers, news syndicates, online, radio and television stations, TV and radio networks and magazines.

“Not a sexy topic, but a vitally important one,” commented the judges on Farabaugh’swinning series. “A terrific explanatory piece that goes right to the source -- the American farmer -- to explore the complex relationship between agriculture and government.”

Farabaugh had won third place in the National Headliner Award Competition in 2017 for the documentary, Faith in Freedom: The Journey of Muslim-American Candidates.
