This week, PD News headlines showcased the myriad powers of sports diplomacy to attract audiences, advance relations with foreign and domestic publics, and advocate for social change. During a state visit to England, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed hope that Britain and China “would strengthen cooperation and exchanges in the area of sports,” noting the power of football to “build bridges with Britain.” Meanwhile, the World Rugby governing body backed a global campaign to eradicate homophobia within the sport, while a soccer club in Leeds, England launched a “Football for All” project to support refugees and asylum seekers.
