Employment in this role is dependent on the successful candidate obtaining and maintaining an Australian Government security clearance to the appropriate level required.  Applicants must be Australian citizens.  Loss of the security clearance at any time will lead to termination of employment.

 

Job Description

The Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland is seeking to fill the position of Human Rights Policy Officer.  The position will support the Human Rights team within the Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations to advance Australia’s human rights, humanitarian and other related priorities within the United Nations and other international organisations.        
The selection for this position will be based on merit and judged against the following Selection Criteria:

 

Duty Statement

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead liaison with non-government organisations on human rights matters, including organising relevant meetings and briefings, and maintain a range of contacts
  • Lead liaison with small island countries, including organising relevant meetings and briefings, and maintain a range of contacts
  • Lead negotiations of resolutions on behalf of the Australian Government at UN conferences and meetings, particularly relating to human rights across the full agenda of the Human Rights Council, and prepare reports on meeting dynamics and outcomes
  • Provide policy advice and briefing papers for use by the UN Mission, primarily relating to human rights, particularly human rights in Africa, good governance and human rights defenders
  • Represent the Australia Government and deliver statements at UN conferences and meetings, particularly relating to human rights, and report on meeting dynamics and outcomes
  • Represent the Australian Government in meetings with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and maintain a range of working-level and senior contacts in relation to relevant subject areas
  • Organise public diplomacy activities supporting Australia’s Human Rights Council objectives, particularly in areas of expertise
  • Assist with the organisation of official visits, including Ministerial visits, and provide support to the official party during visits

Essential

  • University degree in the field of human rights, politics, international relations, law or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated high-level research and analytical skills, including experience/expertise on international human rights
  • Well-developed negotiation and advocacy skills, including sound judgement, and a capacity to exercise discretion and confidentiality
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, flexibility and responsiveness
  • Knowledge of Australian Government policies is an advantage, as is an awareness of international organisations based in Geneva
  • Sound knowledge of the Australian Government’s human rights priorities and positions
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of French is desirable
  • High level administrative and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities independently or with limited direction, and meet deadlines
  • Highly developed interpersonal, representational and networking skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders
  • Competency in standard Microsoft Office applications
