Digital diplomacy is one of the latest trends in public diplomacy [JB emphasis], and governments worldwide are hopping on the bandwagon.
While only in 2007 President Obama became one of the first world leaders to tweet (according to Rebecca Adler-Nissen), the practice has become so commonplace that a "Twiplomacy" study was created to measure it.
In her TEDx Talk, Rebecca Adler-Nissen, Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen, talks about how digital diplomacy is impacting three main pillars of diplomacy: time, space and tact. According to Adler-Nissen, the advent of new technologies has sped up the diplomatic process, given less space for confidentiality and damaged the ability to be tactful "because you can only be so diplomatic in 140 characters."
