Emily Landon - Fulbright Scholar

RICHMOND, Va. – Former Spider swimmer Emily Landon earned a Fulbright Scholarship this past week and will continue her graduate education in Tajikistan next year. Landon, a four-year letterwinner for Spider swimming, graduating in 2018 with a double major in International Studies: World Politics/Diplomacy and Arabic Studies with a minor in history.

Next year, Landon will be teaching in Tajikistan where she'll be working at one of six American Space locations, teaching English and running skills programs that are tailored to her background and student interest. She will also be working in the community. During her undergrad, Landon studied abroad in Morocco and Peru, also teaching English. That experience encouraged her to apply to the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship as she is one of three Richmond Students to earn the scholarship.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant grants provide participants the opportunity to assist in the teaching of English in American Spaces Tajikistan and immerse in the local culture. American Spaces are located throughout Tajikistan and serve as dedicated information centers that help introduce visitors to America's story. The American Spaces also serve as a platform for public diplomacy [JB emphasis] and English language programs, helping to build cultural bridges. The Tajikistan English Teaching Assistant Program seeks applicants who are able to be flexible while functioning in an under-resourced environment and who are eager to immerse in the local culture.
