Foreign Minister Urges Diaspora to Increase Role in Public Diplomacy

Addis Ababa August 14/2015 Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Tedros Adhanom called upon the Ethiopian Diaspora to increase their involvement in public diplomacy and in building the image of the country.

Speaking at a discussion forum organized for the diaspora today, the minister revealed that the government has been carrying out diaspora mapping that would help it identify the distribution of Ethiopians across the world. The mapping will assist the government in reaching the diaspora, he explained.

According to Dr. Tedros, many Ethiopian Diasporas have been contributing to the image building of the country by producing publications, motion pictures, and promoting culture through radio and websites.

While presenting a study on the participation of the diaspora in development activities in Ethiopia, Ambassador Berhanu Kebede, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to England, said the flow of remittance from the diaspora has grown.

According to him, the flow was over one billion USD.

They have also invested close to 23 billion birr in Ethiopia. The investment has created over 125,000 jobs, it was indicated.
