Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
A full time position as a paid intern at the British Embassy in Brussels has become available.
The successful candidate will form part of the Political and Public Diplomacy (PPD) Section, and will assist with delivering the Embassy’s bilateral strategy alongside the wider team.
This will include:
  • Monitoring of the Belgian media;
  • Offering general administrative support to the Embassy’s PPD section;
  • Assisting in the organisation of public diplomacy events and high level visits to promote UK interests in Belgium;
  • The successful candidate will also contribute to the Embassy’s broader political reporting and outreach, including on the political situation in the different Belgian regions;
  • Given the broad remit of the role, the position allows for broad personal and professional development as part of a core team of the Embassy and with regular work appraisal feedback. It would suit a student or graduate with an interest in politics and ambitions to work in an international environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with complying the Embassy’s daily media summary;
  • General administrative support and database management;
  • Assist with the organisation of Embassy events (meetings, conferences, commemorations, etc.), both during the preparation and on the day itself;
  • Participate in the political outreach of the Embassy, both through analytical work and in the participation at bilateral events and meetings.
Essential qualifications and experience
  • Fluent in English and at least intermediate French, both oral and written;
  • University Student or Graduate;
  • Good Organisational skills;
  • Good Communications and Personal skills;
  • Good Analytical Skills;Confident in using Microsoft Office Programs.
Desirable qualifications and experience
  • Knowledge of Dutch;
  • Some prior knowledge of the Belgian political system.

This is a full-time professional immersion traineeship with the duration of 3 months, with possibility to a 3 month extension, 36.25 hours net for 5 working days a week.
The professional immersion indemnity for this position is €766 . The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium follow the Belgian minimum pay scales for paid internships as set out under local labour law.

The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium salaries are not subject to annual indexation. Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Professional Immersion Traineeship Requirements:
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old;
  • Proof of valid medical coverage for the period of the internship (European Health Insurance Card);
  • The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance;
  • Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
