The Regional English Language Office (RELO), part of the Public Affairs section of the United States Embassy in Bangkok, supports public diplomacy outreach through professional development opportunities for English language teachers in Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

The RELO works through the Public Affairs Sections of the U.S. Embassies and U.S. Consulates to create and implement projects and programs related to English language teaching methodology by providing training opportunities, expertise, and materials. The RELO Office in Thailand is one of 25 such offices around the world and is coordinated by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Office of English Language Programs.

Megan Montgomery, English Language Fellow, leads a workshop during the Lower Mekong Initiative Professional Communications Skills for Leader (PCSL) conference. The workshop focuses on presentation skills and develops networking of the government officials between the member countries in the Lower Mekong region.

RELO Programs and Services

Some of the programs and services offered by the RELO include:

• The English Language Fellow program: provides American professional expertise in teaching English as a Foreign Language by sending U.S. experts on ten-month fellowships to overseas academic institutions. • The English Language Specialist program: recruits American academics in the field of TESOL for short-term (two-six week) assignments abroad.  For information on become an EL Specialist. If your institution is interested in hosting an EL Specialist, please contact the RELO.

• Publications: The U.S. government publishes numerous books and other materials for teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language.  English Teaching Forum, one of the world’s leading publications for teachers of English, is available by contacting your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate. A complete list of other publications is available at The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs website.
