Sir, Margaret Beckett’s article on Mugabe (Comment, March 15), refers to two strands in her approach to Zimbabwe. There is, however, a third strand.

The Minister with special responsibility for Africa, Lord Triesman, has made some very eloquent speeches and he comes across as very sincere in his views. But what is missing is any kind of effective public diplomacy [JB emphasis] effort in Africa, to explain to the leaders and, behind them the electorate, the true nature of the regime and the reasons why it is in the interests of all Africans to get rid of these evil and corrupt people. ...
