STENGEL PRAISES TECH FIRMS, DOESN'T HATE ON ANONYMOUS — At a New America event last night about terrorism and social media, State Department Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Richard Stengel had supportive words for two groups that sometimes take a beating in national security circles: U.S. tech companies and hacker group Anonymous. "In many ways those tech companies have been the unsung heroes of the counter ISIL-campaign," said Stengel, pointing to "what Twitter has done in taking down thousands and thousands of handles and interrupting hashtags." In response to an audience question about hacker efforts to get accounts yanked, Stengel said, "we don’t work with Anonymous, but at the same time we don't frown on efforts against ISIL in the digital space." ...
