BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

Under the direct supervision of the Information Officer, the Digital Media Specialist coordinates the Consulate’s outreach programs involving USG informational materials, including digital and social media as well as traditional reference services. Ensures that these programs advance the Mission’s public diplomacy goals. The position includes responsibility for coordination and oversight of our online presence. With the Social Media Assistant, helps to create, design, and manage text, video and graphic design content for the Consulate website, Facebook, Twitter feeds, and other social media. Supervises two LES employees who 1) design and provide content for social media platforms; 2) provide content for the Consulate website; and 3) offer traditional reference services, including access to USG information products.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

 

Applicants must address each required qualification listed below with specific information supporting each item. Failure to do so may result in a determination that the applicant is not qualified.

1. EDUCATION: University degree in journalism, marketing, information science, library science, international affairs, communications, or American studies is required.

2. EXPERIENCE:
  • At least four years of progressively responsible experience in the field of social media, journalism, communications, marketing, and/or information distribution science.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience is required.

3. LANGUAGE: Level IV (fluent) in both written and spoken English and Chinese is required. (This will be tested.)

4. JOB KNOWLEDGE:
  • Must have strong knowledge of the latest trends in information science and technology as well as researching online audiences in order to create content targeted to their interests.
  • Must be expert in drafting (English and Chinese) and designing visual materials for use on the Consulate’s digital media platforms.

5. SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must have experience creating goal-focused content for digital media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Weibo, Internet websites, and webchats.
  • Must have experience writing copy and editing and producing videos for these platforms.
  • Needs familiarity with social media analytic tools.
  • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
  • Must be able to use Internet and traditional reference tools to answer queries from target audiences.
  • Must have the ability to train, supervise, evaluate, and inspire team members.
