A full time position for Media Officer has become vacant in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for suitably qualified applicants on a contractual basis. The Media Officer plays an important role in devising and implementing media strategies in support of embassy activities and Australian Government Policies and initiatives.
Selection Criteria
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Applicants must provide a written Statement of Claims of no more than three pages to show their suitability under each of the following Selection Criteria. The Statement of Claims forms the most important part of the application, as this information, together with a resume of no more than two pages, will be used to shortlist applicants for further consideration for the vacancy. - Previous work experience in relevant field with demonstrated understanding of the Thai media industry.
- Proven strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to liaise with contacts at all levels in both private and government sectors. Strong networking skills, including making and retaining contacts.
- Demonstrated high level organisation and prioritisation skills. Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team. Demonstrated experience working under pressure and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Superior written and oral communication skills in English and Thai.
- At least a bachelor degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum of five years employment experience. Knowledge of Australia is highly desirable.

About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
The Media Officer has a critical role in supporting the Public Diplomacy section on a full-time basis. Alongside A-based staff members, devise and implement media strategies in support of Embassy activities and Australian Government policies and initiatives. Manage the embassy’s Facebook page and discrete public diplomacy activities as required. Monitor, disseminate and, where necessary, respond to local media reporting on Australia or Australian Government policies. The Media Officer must maintain and develop a network of key local Thai and English-language journalists.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Alongside First Secretary (political/economic) and Director Public and Cultural Diplomacy, develop and implement public relations and media strategies for Embassy activities.
- Manage the Embassy’s Facebook page alongside Second Secretary (political).
- Manage with limited supervision discrete public diplomacy activities in support of the Embassy’s public diplomacy objectives.
- Build, maintain and extend the Embassy’s contacts among key local journalists and in media organisations (i.e. Thai, Australian and other journalists / media based in Thailand). Principally responsible for International Media Visits.
- Monitor local and international news for articles relevant to Embassy work, compile/summarise press clippings and keep Embassy staff informed of media coverage of relevant issues.
- Organise attendance of local media and photographers at press conferences and Embassy functions, including outside Bangkok.
- Prepare or review press releases for Embassy activities in English and / or Thai.
- Provide advice on the Thai media to senior staff and all agencies at the Embassy to assist in their dealings with the media.
- Act as interpreter at press conferences, interviews or other engagements attended by the local media as well as interpret at high-level meetings for Ambassador/visiting ministers as required.
- Conduct research on specific political and economic issues under direction from A-based staff.
- Provide back up to other public diplomacy staff members.
Qualifications/Experience
- Possess high-level interpersonal, organisational and prioritization skills
- Have the ability to work under pressure and to deadlines and work outside office hours if required.
- Be outgoing, action-oriented and interested in seeking innovative solutions.
- Have the ability to develop and maintain contacts.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative as well as perform as part of a team.
- Be willing to travel, internationally and domestically, for work purposes, if required.
- Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline and good knowledge of the Thai media industry. At least five years work experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Thai.
- Experience in public relations and liaising with the media.
- Knowledge of Australia, including the Australian media industry highly desirable.
- Demonstrated competence in the use of the Microsoft suite of software products, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access and social media. Experience with new media and film production desirable.
