Gallais E Matheny Obituary
Gallais E. Matheny

Gallais E. Matheny died suddenly at home in Ashland, VA on Monday, May 22.  Gale, the son of the late Marine Col. G.E. Matheny and Kathryn Matheny, was born on March 7, 1939 in Roanoke, VA.

Gale attended the University of Virginia and Old Dominion University where he received his Masters in American History.  He then taught school in the Norfolk area, at John Tyler Community College in Chesterfield, and at Prince George County High School.  In 1984 he retired from public education and moved to Madrid, Spain where his wife, Judy Futch, was a new Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Information Agency. They later moved to Seoul, South Korea, New Delhi, India, and Rome, Italy.  While overseas, he taught English to college students and business men in Seoul, mentored other students, coached Little League baseball and volunteered for four years at the USO in Rome.

Gale enjoyed traveling to more than 60 countries overseas.  He was an avid reader, loved playing golf and coaching high school golf teams.  He particularly enjoyed live theater in London, New York and the Richmond area, as well as playing bridge with friends.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a highly intelligent individual with a great sense of humor and enjoyed staying in touch with former students and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Judith A. Futch, his daughter, Allyson Matheny, two grandsons, Cameron Green and Owen Green and two brothers, Bill Matheny of Lynchburg, VA and Jim Matheny of Roanoke, VA.
A Memorial Service for Gale Matheny was held at the First Baptist Church in Ashland, VA on Friday, June 23.
