Under Secretary Stengel Travels to Japan and Malaysia

Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Richard Stengel will travel to Japan and Malaysia, November 17–21, 2015, to promote public diplomacy and the importance of close ties with the region.

In Tokyo, Under Secretary Stengel will meet with young leaders from business, social innovation, and government sectors to discuss how their initiatives are working to shape the future of Japan and the bilateral relationship. He will also speak to university students on public diplomacy issues and will attend a piano concert hosted by Ambassador Kennedy for Carnegie Hall’s “Notables Japan” – Carnegie Hall’s first-ever overseas membership and philanthropic group.

In Kuala Lumpur, Under Secretary Stengel plans on meeting with youth leaders from the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI). Launched in 2013, YSEALI is U.S. President Barack Obama’s signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. Under Secretary Stengel will also meet with Malaysian Government counterparts to discuss cooperation on countering violent extremism.
