On 4 December, Irwin Steven Goldstein was sworn in as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Goldstein is a communications and branding executive. Before becoming Under Secretary, his latest position was as senior vice president of BP Global Solutions, a New York consulting firm. His professional experience also includes seven years at a financial services provider as executive vice president and chief communications officer.

Goldstein also has experience in government: During the administration of President George H.W. Bush, he served as an assistant to the secretary and the director of public affairs at the US Department of the Interior. Prior to that he served for eight years as a press secretary and chief of staff to several members of Congress.

Voice of America (VOA) reports his qualifications as matching those of his predecessors, naming former White House senior adviser Karen Hughes under George W. Bush's administration and the former Time editor Richard Stengel under Obama's."
