If China’s long game to subsume Taiwan in fact as well as in form is to be hastened, as various indicators suggest, this poses inescapable menace. Although without diplomatic heft, Taiwan represents both advanced capitalism and a democratic ideal that will be difficult for any American government to abandon. Congress remains a hotbed of support for the Taiwanese, with a remarkably bipartisan disregard for Beijing. (Only Russia seems to deflect the popular animus.)
