The U.S. State Department continues work to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation, which could affect the oligarchs from the encirclement of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Steven Goldstein, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, said at a briefing in Washington on January 9, 2018.

In particular, he was asked whether the State Department was still on track for doing its part in implementing sanctions on Russia that were passed by Congress by the end of January.

"That is still the timeframe. Our position has not changed on that," he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl said that sanctions introduced against Russia, aiming mainly at its energy sector, had failed to succeed and turned to be ineffective.
