Rice University graduate Ben Rhodes was an aspiring novelist pursuing his M.F.A. at New York University when he witnessed the Twin Towers fall on September 11. The terrorist attack sparked a professional change of course that saw him abandon writing fiction for international affairs.

In less than a decade, Rhodes found himself serving as deputy national security adviser for President Barack Obama. During his eight years in the White House, Rhodes’ official duties included overseeing national security communications, speechwriting, public diplomacy [JB emphasis], and global engagement messaging. But as one of Obama’s most trusted confidants and loyal lieutenants, Rhodes not only disseminated policy, he helped shape it.

In his new book—The World As It Is: Inside the Obama White House—Rhodes offers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at many of the definitive moments of Obama’s presidency. In conversation with Jim Falk at the Warwick Melrose on June 19, Rhodes will also share his insider’s perspective on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the “Iran Nuclear Deal” – from which the U.S. recently withdrew.
