OTTAWA - It may come as a surprise, but there's a sporty side to the European Union. Motivated by our two-time win at Ottawa's Dragon Boat Race, the European Union Delegation to Canada is making a comeback – this time at the Ottawa 5K Run.
And we are making our debut on a high note – with a 100-strong team of runners, and from 16 countries, including Canada, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the European Union. European Union Ambassador Peteris Ustubs, French Ambassador Kareen Rispal and Slovenian Ambassador Marjan Cencen are also part of the 5K Run. It is the hope of our multicultural and diverse team that this annual event will bring the diplomatic community, our families and Canadian hosts together to form new friendships and connections.
May is also a special month for Europeans everywhere, a time to celebrate peace and unity in Europe and beyond. It was on 9 May 1950 when Robert Schuman - the French foreign minister at the time - made his famous Declaration, in effect launching an ambitious mission of unity that led to the world's largest peace project: the European Union. Europe Day has been celebrated every 9 May ever since.
We are pleased to join Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend and be part of this fun-filled family event. Come out and cheer for us! Go EU Team Go!
About the Delegation of the European Union to Canada
Established in 1976, the European Union Delegation to Canada is a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and, as such, the natural contact point in Canada between the EU and the Canadian authorities. It also has a strong public diplomacy [JB emphasis] mandate designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the European Union as well as EU-Canada relations.
