GUWAHATI: Bhutan’s Drukair Corporation Ltd will start flight between Paro and Singapore via Guwahati.
Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, Joint Secretary in Union ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and National Coordinator (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) who was in Guwahati on Tuesday said recently Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met Bhutanese Prime Minster Tshering Tobgay and Bhutan has informed Drukair will start flight between Paro and Singapore via Guwahati.
Earlier Drukair Corporation Ltd has started flight between Paro-Guwahati and Bangkok.
Assam government offered to provide Rs 100 crore for expansion of air connectivity in the state under the centrally-sponsored scheme UDAN to connect ASEAN countries from Guwahati.
Assam Industry minister, Chandra Mohan Patwary said, “We are trying and will start international flight to some South East Asian countries from Guwahati by October this year.”
As part of enhanced public diplomacy [JB emphasis] outreach, the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs have started reaching to people in the grassroots.
Raveesh Kumar, Official Spokesperson and Joint Secretary (External Publicity) of the MEA said, “India’s engagement with neighbours has increased manifold. There is focus on Act East policy."
He added that to get inputs from the states the ministry is organizing Delhi dialogue. “Six chief ministers of Northeast India have conformed for Delhi dialogue on Wednesday. In past we had meeting on Act East which was attended by Governors of Northeast India.”
He said that foreign policy is getting mainstreamed. “Each visit of Prime minister to a foreign country has a bearing on people in the ground.” (Eom)
