Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Sweden is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

We are seeking to recruit a Communications Officer (B3).

This is a new position created to expand the embassy’s capacity to communicate with the Swedish government, population, media, and institutions, and British citizens in Sweden. Our exit from the EU puts a greater responsibility on our embassies in EU Member States, including in Stockholm, to develop and deepen our bilateral relationships, and public-facing communications are a key part of this. The purpose of this role is to work with all teams in the embassy to identify and exploit communications opportunities, covering the whole of Sweden. The job will cover all communications tools, but with a particular emphasis on making best use of social media. Innovation and creativity are key. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Raising the profile of the UK and the British/Swedish relationship in Sweden, by identifying and exploiting communications opportunities for the embassy (approximately 60% of time)
  • Contribute to reinforcing and expanding the bilateral relationship between the UK and Sweden, identifying opportunities and ensuring (where appropriate) they have a high public profile (approximately 30% of time)
  • Other tasks in support of the political team (approximately 10% of time)
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Fluent English and excellent communication skills; 
  • Strong networking and influencing skills, ability to liaise with stakeholders at all levels;
  • Intermediate skills of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Ability to grasp complex issues quickly and communicate these simply and effectively;
  • Good research and analysis skills;
  • Experience of project work and delivering events.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Experience of government, embassy or NGO work
  • Policy (academic or practitioner) background in one or more of the areas specified in the job description
  • Communications experience

Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Sweden and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months with possibility of contract extension for another 12 months.

The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits applications.

According to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, locally employed staff should either be Swedish citizens, EU citizens or permanent residents of any nationality registered in the population register when beginning their employment.
