Tulane University sophomore Elli Goldberg is spending her summer working as a public affairs intern at the United States Embassy in Lima, Peru.
Goldberg, who is majoring in international relations and Middle Eastern studies, is quite pleased with the chance to apply her studies to real-world situations.
“I’m considering the U.S. Foreign Service as one of my future career options,” said Goldberg. “I thought this would be an incredible opportunity to experience that work firsthand.”
At the embassy, Goldberg’s role is to work on public diplomacy outreach, cultural and educational programming, and engaging Peruvian and American people with one another.
Her recent assignments have been to assist with the creation of a directory for International Exchange alumni and organizing a visit by Jill Biden, wife of the U.S. vice president.
Goldberg’s job has taught her a lot, she said. She’s gained inspiration from her coworkers and learned how to navigate challenges. Although commuting through the city and coordinating large-scale projects have been difficult, she said that the internship is an experience that is “full of support, friendship and people reaching out to one another.”
Claire Davenport is a junior at Tulane University, majoring in English and political science.
