The German government has set up language classes in local primary schools to ease the cultural transition for refugee children arriving in Germany. An estimated 300,000 children have arrived in Germany since 2015, many of whom do not speak German. To help them adapt, a new cultural diplomacy project places German and refugee students together in “friendship groups,” where they can collaborate and share story-based projects such as films, plays and songs with their classmates. As this video from Deutsche Welle News (DW) demonstrates, cultural exchanges and youth programs can help facilitate cross-cultural understanding, friendships and social inclusion for German and refugee children alike.
