Introduction The British Embassy in Oslo is part of the United Kingdom's world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Norway. The Embassy is looking for a Political, Press and Public Affairs Assistant to join the Political team. The main purpose of the role is to support the delivery of UK Government's political and public diplomacy objectives in Norway
. This full-time position will support the Head of the Political, Press and Public Affairs section, working on a range of policy areas and public diplomacy activities. This is both an internal-facing role (involving research and briefing) and external - facing role (including press liaison, dealing with public inquiries and managing the embassy's social media channels). Main Duties / Responsibilities Political support

  • Produce research and analysis in response to adhoc briefing requests and current UK/Norway policy priorities;
  • Through a combination of desk research and development of external contact network, maintain oversight of Norway's international development/humanitarian agenda, producing briefings and updates that help to identify areas of synergy with UK priorities;
  • Act as the main embassy contact point on the UK/ Norway Sellafield dialogue - spotting risks and opportunities to ensure close bilateral working;
Press and Public diplomacy


  • Working with colleagues across the embassy, implement and update the embassy's public diplomacy strategy;
  • Maximize the potential of the embassy's twitter, facebook and website to support delivery of the embassy's objectives;
  • Respond to queries from members of the public and act as the main point of contact for press enquiries. Handle incoming correspondence received through the public website/email and post, ensuring that relevant sections are involved, and drafting appropriate replies in English or Norwegian.
Required Experience and Skills


  • Bachelor's degree in political or public diplomacy related area;
  • Professional experience in a policy research or public affairs role;
  • Knowledge of and interest in Norwegian politics;Excellent research skills and ability to synthesize complex information into concise reports;
  • Professionally fluent Norwegian and English language skills, both verbal and written;
  • Competence in the following areas:
o Engaging Internationally o Making Effective Decisions o Leading and Communicating o Collaborating and Partnering o Delivering at Pace o Seeing the Big Picture


  • Organised and structured approach to work;
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work and comfortable with changing priorities.
Terms and Conditions This is a full-time permanent contract for 5 working days (35 hours net) per week. The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and 6 months' probation period. The successful candidate will be required to undergo specialist training in British government financial procedures. Employees recruited locally by the British Embassy Oslo are subject to terms and conditions of service in accordance with Norwegian employment law.
