Netball Australia is proud to be a key partner in the Australian Government’s $1.4 million Asian Sports
Partnership (ASP) program, announced today by Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop.

Under the program, Netball Australia will receive $200,000 in funding to implement an exciting new
program One Netball Asia which will work with countries within the Asian Netball Federation to
increase participation levels among women and girls in netball and contribute to health and leadership
outcomes.

This program expands on Netball Australia’s successful Australia Post One Netball community
program that’s been delivered since 2016 and complements One Netball Pacific, an initiative under the
Australian Government’s Pacific Sports Partnership program.

The ASP aims to make a positive contribution to development and public diplomacy outcomes in the
Asian region, through effective sports partnerships.

The ASP was launched by Minister Bishop at Kirribilli House in Sydney today with Australia Post One
Netball Ambassador Mo’onia Gerrard, a former Australian Diamonds representative, among the sports
stars in attendance.

The announcement of the ASP coincides with the International Day of Sport for Development and
Peace, celebrated on April 6, which signifies the positive influence that sport can have on the
advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.

Netball Australia’s CEO Kate Palmer said the Asian Sports Partnership was an exciting opportunity to
raise awareness and increase the profile of netball in a huge growth market for the sport.
“Netball is the world’s number one team sport for women,” Palmer said.

“This program will allow Netball Australia and our partners to engage thousands of women in positive,
supportive environments that provide the opportunity and encourage them to get active, build networks
and practice their leadership skills.

“The Community Development team at Netball Australia has a wealth of experience in establishing
highquality, highimpact sport for development programs and we’re excited to share this expertise with
our closest neighbours.”

Netball Australia is exploring opportunities to deliver One Netball Asia in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Timor-Leste.
