Vacancy: Public Diplomacy and Consular Officer

The Embassy of Australia in The Hague is seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual to undertake a range of duties as our Public Diplomacy and Consular Officer.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with excellent organisational and problem-solving skills and the creativity and people skills to develop networks to advance Australia’s interests in the Netherlands.

Duties

The position is responsible for leading the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy program as well as providing Consular services to Australian Citizens. 
Public diplomacy duties include:
  • designing and implementing a coordinated public diplomacy strategy to advance Australia’s interests in the Netherlands, increase public understanding of Australian policies, and project a positive image of Australia;
  • building productive partnerships and relationships with Dutch counterparts across government, the media, the private sector, academic and think tank institutions, and the arts and cultural communities;
  • managing a program of provincial visits by the Ambassador;
  • implementing the Embassy’s economic diplomacy strategy;
  • organising events, receptions, and commemorations;
  • managing the Embassy’s social media presence; and
  • recruiting and managing an intern
Consular duties include:
  • assisting Australian citizens in difficulty in the Netherlands in accordance with the Australian Consular Charter;
  • providing advice and assistance to consular, passport and notarial clients;
  • contributing to and maintaining the Embassy’s Crisis Management Plan and Australian travel advice for the Netherlands and other reporting/policy documents; and
  • contributing to the Embassy’s business continuity and consular crises response with the guidance of Australian based staff
Other duties may include:
  • reporting and analysing relevant policy developments in the Netherlands;
  • coordinating VIP visits;
  • translating documents and Embassy communications between English and Dutch;
  • Passport services to Australian Citizens as back up Passports Officer;
  • administrative and financial duties as back up Accountant; and
  • other duties as required.

Selection Criteria

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in building networks;
  2. The creativity to develop innovative public diplomacy programs and events and the drive and organisational skills to deliver them;
  3. Advanced written and oral communication skills in both Dutch and English;
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently and harmoniously within a small team;
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter;
  6. Minimum of three years relevant work experience;
  7. Valid driver’s licence desirable.
It is highly desirable that applicants have experience and good knowledge of Australia and the Netherlands.

The position is at the LE4 level and is available from July 2018 for an initial one-year fixed contract. The full-time salary per month at commencement is €3,999 gross on the basis of a 37.5hr working week (please note that the Embassy is not a tax withholding employer and staff members are therefore responsible for paying their own income tax and social security). Annual benefits include 8 per cent holiday bonus and 25 days leave. Engagement is contingent upon the successful applicant being able to present a positive police clearance form (VOG).
