Independent Diplomat (ID) seeks two interns to start work in its Brussels office from mid-September 2018. Independent Diplomat is not in a position to provide a stipend for this position [Commuting to/from ID offices and travel to required external meetings will be covered].
ID is a unique non-profit venture in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. Staffed by former diplomats, international lawyers and experts in media and international relations, ID offers independent and confidential advice and assistance on diplomatic technique and strategy to governments, international institutions, INGOs and political groups. In addition to Brussels, ID also have offices in New York, London and Geneva. ID Brussels’ team includes four full-time staff member. ID internships provide an excellent opportunity for applicants looking to gain first-hand training and experience by being closely involved in a fast-paced international team working at the cutting edge of international affairs and diplomacy. Successful candidate will be self-motivated, passionate about international affairs, and able to quickly synthesise complex information from a variety of sources.
Internship Details:
ID Brussels Autumn 2018 internships begin in mid-September for an initial period (preferably) of no less than six months. The position is full-time during regular office hours.
ID seeks to bridge three branches of diplomacy: policy, public diplomacy, and legal. Interns will be encouraged to contribute to each of these areas and across the broad spectrum of ID’s client work and geographical areas of focus. Depending on the role, interns’ work typically involves research, media monitoring, administrative tasks, development of social media materials, and preparation of official visits as well as assistance with drafting of meeting reports, policy recommendations and diplomatic communications. Interns should also be prepared to assist with the smooth functioning of the ID Brussels office, including through contributions to general office administration and event organisation.

Essential Qualifications:
The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong interest in international affairs, conflict prevention and dispute resolution, as well as the mission of Independent Diplomat more broadly. In addition candidates must have:
  • At least a 2:1 or equivalent Bachelor degree;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Fluency in English (C1), and good basic knowledge of French or German;
  • Demonstrate interested in international and diplomacy, including through seminar, workshops, training courses;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and/or experience of the EU and its institutions relevant to foreign policy;
  • Creativity and dynamism, as well as a passion for taking on new challenges;
  • Interest in working as part of a small team and in taking on individual projects;
  • Strong research and computer skills;
  • A strong work ethic and attention to detail;
  • The ability to multitask and manage multiple projects at one time.
Additional Criteria:
ID Brussels internships place an emphasis on skills building and dynamic thinking. We do not expect our interns to be experts in international affairs. However, as you pursue your application, you may wish to emphasize the following:
  • Fluency in other official European languages, in particular French or German;
  • Arabic language skills represent an asset;
  • Experience or knowledge of one of the following ID program areas: the Middle East (particularly on Syria and Yemen); Africa (particularly Western Sahara and Mali), or South Asia (particularly on Myanmar) as well as thematic areas such as: accountability, international human rights law; women / gender sensitivity; climate change; and refugees / migration policy;
  • First level degree in relevant subject (Politics, International Law etc.);
  • Graphic design skills for social media products highly welcomed;
  • Experience and/or knowledge of EU funding will be considered an asset;

The cover letter should:
  • Explain the reasons for your interest in an internship with ID;
  • Demonstrate your suitability for the role;
  • Indicate your preferred length of internship (no less than four months), and your availability to work full or part-time.
The CV should include the names and contact details of two references, ideally an academic reference and a reference of a current or recent internship or employer.
