The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia's security, enhancing Australia's prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia's pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About the position
The Public Diplomacy & Research Officer is responsible for developing and implementing the public diplomacy program at the Australian Embassy in Stockholm to promote and enhance Australia's interest in Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. The position also provides translating services, conducts research and analysis and reports of political, economic and legal developments relevant to Australian interests.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
In consultation with the Third/Second Secretary, develop and implement the annual public-diplomacy strategy and program of events for the Embassy.
Identify opportunities to advance the Embassy's public and economic-diplomacy goals.
Build and maintain a network of key media contacts, particularly in Sweden but also in Finland, Estonia and Latvia; liaise with media contacts on press coverage of Australia; and identify suitable media-promotion opportunities for the Embassy.
Maintain the Embassy's web page and Facebook page and explore opportunities to develop the Embassy's online and social-media presence.
Monitor Swedish, Finnish, Estonian and Latvian media sources daily and prepare summaries of key new items and developments.
Undertake research and prepare reports on international and domestic issues in Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia.
Conduct research and analysis and prepare reports on political and economic developments and other specific topics as directed by the Ambassador and Third/Second Secretary.
Organise programs for visitors from Australia and provide support for high-level visits, commemorative events and official functions.
Provide translating services between English and Swedish as required
Provide backup support to the Ambassador's Personal Assistant during periods of absence.
Qualifications/Experience
Demonstrated ability to translate between English and Swedish.
High-level research and analytical skills and an ability to produce high-quality written reports in English.
Sound interpersonal skills and an ability to represent, network and establish effective relationships.
An ability to prioritise and manage time effectively and meet tight deadlines.
An ability to demonstrate sound judgement and discretion; show initiative; and work both independently and as part of a team.
A good understanding of Sweden's government, economy, society and international policies and priorities would be an advantage.
