KAZAKHSTAN Exhibition opens to mark 25th anniversary of Semipalatinsk test site shutdown 26.08.2016 20:35 , kazakh-tv.kz

Exactly a quarter of century ago, the President of Kazakhstan signed the decree, which initiated the strengthening of nuclear safety worldwide. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs opened a historical and documentary exhibition devoted to this historic date. It submitted copies of 206 unique archival materials and photographs dated from 1949-2013. The letter of Beria to Stalin about the creation of the Soviet nuclear weapons, maps of test sites and, the decree of the President to close the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site were included. Some of the documents were kept secret for a long time. All the exhibits show how active the role of Kazakhstan was in the global nuclear disarmament.

After the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site, Kazakhstan has become one of the leaders of the global movement for nuclear disarmament and renounced the world’s fourth largest nuclear arsenal and, holds decisive steps to achieve this noble aims. One of these steps has become an initiative of the ATOM Project by the President in the field of public diplomacy.
