The British Embassy in Tunis currently has a vacancy for EU Exit Officer, Grade – B3 (L).
Main purpose of job:
This is a fascinating job where you will be supporting delivery of the UK’s current foreign policy priority: the successful withdrawal of the UK from the European Union. The key objective will be achieving a successful transition of the EU-Tunisia Association Agreement into a bilateral UK-Tunisia agreement with a focus on trade and policy. You will also explore and lead initiatives to strengthen the bilateral relationship with Tunisia following the UK’s departure from the EU. To achieve this you will need to build strong relationships with key stakeholders including ministries, political parties, parliamentary committees and business in order to inform policymakers.
You will also work with the Embassy’s Prosperity Team and Trade team to explore ways in which we can boost commercial relations before and after Brexit, searching for sector opportunities, organising Brexit-related visits from London, ensuring concrete deliverables, visit follow-up and strong communications strategy. You will also coordinate with other parts of the embassy to help reinforce cross-mission understanding of developments relating to Brexit and what these mean for the embassy’s work.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Support the development of a cross-mission Brexit strategy, working with the full range of UK Government Departments to support them on the change in how policy is delivered
- Transition the EU-Tunisia Association Agreement liaising with the Tunisian Government’s Brexit Committee, National Assembly committees, political parties and business community;
- Support Trade and Political Teams in the management of inward visits from UK including drafting programmes, handling logistical arrangements and identifying public diplomacy [JB emphasis] opportunities;
- Participate in the Embassy Economic Diplomacy Working Group to help identify what Brexit means for the work of the embassy as well as identifying trade, investment and public diplomacy opportunities for the Ambassador and other diplomats;
- Keep on top of the core messages coming from the centre ensuring these are effectively managed within the business community and assumed into the embassy core script;
- Work closely with the Embassy’s economic, trade and programme teams to identify where the UK can provide assistance to support the ease of doing business.
- Develop relationships with key trade and political stakeholders, identifying where the UK can focus business and investment efforts to optimise business opportunities post Brexit and identify and manage aid-funded opportunities for UK businesses.
- Research trade and investment sectors identifying potential post-Brexit opportunities, liaising closely with the Ambassador, trade, programme and political teams to help deliver these business opportunities
- Perform ad-hoc outreach to the local press to keep them informed on UK policy.

Essential:
- Undergraduate degree in politics, international relations, economics or similar degree
- High standard of spoken and written English (IELTS score of at least 7 or equivalent)
- Bilingual level of spoken and written French and Arabic
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how Tunisian legislation is passed/ratified
- In-depth knowledge of National Assembly Committees and party politics
- An interest in domestic and international politics and current affairs
- An interest in trade work, ideally with some business related background
- Working knowledge of Microsoft applications
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
Working hours and remuneration:
Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays.
- The British Embassy in Tunisia offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 2,992 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 3,702. This is a full-time, fixed term for 6 months.
- The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-day probationary period.
- The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
