Tuesday's [September 19] edition of “Morning Joe” saw the cable news show celebrating it's 10-year anniversary of being on the air — not to mention co-host Mika Brzezinski's birthday.
As such, the show saw a slew of big-name guests throughout Tuesday episode. One of those guests, in particular, had some rather strong words in response to President Donald Trump's effect on the American legacy.
Former Managing Editor of Time Magazine — and former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs — Richard Stengel touched on a term coined by then-Time Publisher Henry Luce: The American Century.
The term was originally meant to describe what Luce thought the role of the U.S. would be and should be during the 20th century.
“When I was editor of Time,” Stengel said, “the last thing I wanted to do was pronounce the end of the American Century.” He continued by saying that he felt that “Donald Trump is the end of the American Century.”
“Not the end of American power,” Stengel added. “But the end of American moral influence. We were a moral beacon for people.”
“Donald Trump doesn't like that stuff,” he continued.
Co-host Joe Scarborough added that it was during the “American Century that ”[America] went out and embraced the world and the world embraced us back, for the most part."
