Award-winning dance group We're Muslim Don't Panic is on a mission to stamp out Islamophobia with hip-hop [see video]. The group’s founder, Amirah Sackett, established the dance troupe in 2011 to promote a different image of Muslim women to the world. The dancers perform in traditional Islamic garments including hijabs (hair veils), niqabs (face veils) and abayas (long dresses) to challenge stereotypes that Muslim women are voiceless. As Sackett explains, “We want to open peoples’ eyes to a different image of Muslim women…and inspire Muslim girls to pursue what they love.” Sackett hopes her dance troupe will engage more people in conversation and understanding about Islam, and in the process, help bring people of all faiths together.
