Overseas compatriots express support for Taiwan

Kaohsiung, May 18 (CNA) Taiwanese expats attending the fifth World Conference on Overseas Community Affairs being held in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, issued a joint statement on Thursday expressing their firm support for Taiwan.

The six-point statement called on overseas compatriots around the world, regardless of political affiliation, to jointly work for democracy and freedom in Taiwan.

It also urged compatriots around the world to support Taiwan government's New Southward Policy and the forward-looking infrastructure construction project, while also organizing tourist groups to visit Taiwan and encouraging investment.

On promoting the sustainable development of overseas compatriot communities, the statement pledged to dedicate more effort to the education of the younger generation and encourage younger Taiwanese descendants to conduct advanced studies in Taiwan.

They also called for a greater effort to promote public diplomacy in their countries of residence to help broaden acceptance of Taiwan in the international community.

They urged the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to embrace mutual respect for the sake of people's welfare, regional peace and stability, while encouraging new immigrants from Taiwan and China to visit Taiwan and gain a better understanding of current developments in freedom and democracy.

About 300 leaders and representatives of overseas compatriot communities from 67 countries are attending the conference which is being held from May 15-19.
