Sophie Grove, contributor to Monocle magazine, has published a piece this month examining the process and execution of Vatican foreign policy. Her analysis focuses on both the Pope—whose diplomatic style is summarized as a “combination of ritual, prayer, and frank discussions on world affairs,”—and on the nuncios who comprise the papal diplomatic corps. Noting that the Holy See is both a global network and a microstate, Grove examines how this dual status presents both benefits and challenges for the Vatican's foreign policy objectives.
